From non-woven wool felt to crafted architectural textures

Felmera carpets are not made from traditional wool yarn, like most wool rugs on the market. Instead, we work with industrial (technical)  wool felt – a distinctive material that combines centuries of wool craftsmanship with modern textile engineering.

Industrial wool felt is made from 100% sheep’s wool. Unlike woven textiles, it is not created by interlacing yarns. Instead, it is formed by compressing and densifying wool fibres into a compact textile structure. Through the application of heat, moisture, pressure, and mechanical action, the fibres naturally interlock and bond together, resulting in a dense, stable, and highly durable material.

For our carpets, we use high-quality wool felt produced in Spain from Europe from wool sourced from certified ecological farms. The wool is obtained through responsible farming practices with a strong focus on animal welfare and sustainable land management. The material also carries an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) certification.

An EPD is an independently verified document that transparently communicates the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire lifecycle – from raw material extraction, through manufacturing, to end-of-life recycling or disposal. It is based on measurable data and provides clear, science-based proof of environmental performance.

The result is a natural material with exceptional functional properties, long-term durability, and a fully documented sustainable origin.

Why wool felt?

• Excellent acoustic performance, helping to absorb sound and reduce reverberation in interiors

• Natural thermal insulation, making it warm and comfortable underfoot

• Moisture-regulating properties, supporting a healthier indoor climate

• High durability, suitable for everyday architectural use

• Natural lanolin content, which helps repel dirt and supports easy maintenance

Material as a design foundation

Instead of weaving yarn, we work with narrow strips of technical wool felt, which are carefully placed side by side to create a distinctive structural pattern. This process forms a surface with rhythm, depth, and a subtle architectural texture.

It is this material that defines the identity of Felmera carpets – not just as floor coverings, but as tactile interior elements that bring calm, warmth, and timelessness into a space.
